In this clip the teacher is leading a recap discussion with the whole class.
Meaning of Average Speed, Clip 1, 3:26
The class discusses how average speed can be calculated. They recall the formula that distance equals rate times time and realize they need a certain distance.
The teacher then asks if their average speed is the speed they are going the whole time. Since average rate of change is a theme that will continue through the semester, this is an opportunity to being to build a strong understanding as a class.
In this case the instructor turns the discussion to how they can get a more accurate measurement. The students respond that a shorter distance would be needed. The term instantaneous speed was even suggested by one of the students. The teacher took the opportunity to bring this concept out and will have other opportunities to do so when the class is dealing with average rates of change.
